"My son hasn't said a civil word to me in months." "Even though I try, I can't help but cry everyday." "More and more I find I'm sleeping less and feeling more anxious and stressed out." Sometimes
you need to talk Occasionally, we all need a little help to get through the challenges that confront us in life. Frequent arguments, changes in sleeping/eating patterns, reduced capacity for work, loss of interest in the things you usually enjoy, change in personality, stress headaches, when you feel trapped, like there is nowhere to turn, or when it's not getting any better -- all of these may be signs that it's time to get extra help. When you need to talk to someone who can help, you need an experienced, trained professional. The certified/licensed professionals at The Institute for Family Development have been working with children, adolescents, and adults who need help with:
All counseling services start with a thorough evaluation. We use this evaluation to help formulate a diagnosis and a treatment plan. As part of the evaluation, we may ask you to tell us what you hope to gain from therapy / what your goals are and ask you to complete a questionnaire. Sometimes, depending on the reason you're seeking counseling, we may request that some testing be done or refer you to another professional for further evaluation for other conditions, if this hasn't been done recently. Once the evaluation is completed, we will discuss our findings and our recommendations. We will then discuss with you how you would like to proceed. While we try to keep the length of your treatment as brief as possible, we don't offer promises of "quick fixes." Psychotherapy is not like visiting a medical doctor. It requires your very active involvement and efforts to change thoughts, feelings and behaviors. Therapy takes a commitment - of time, money and energy and so a therapist should be carefully chosen. After your initial evaluation, we will refer you to the member of our professional staff that we believe would fit your needs the best. We strongly believe you should be comfortable with the therapist you choose and so we encourage you to discuss any discomfort or concerns you have with your therapist. If at any time you wish another professional's opinion, we will be happy to assist you in finding someone qualified and provide them with the essential information needed. The Institute for Family Development offers individual therapy for children (ages 3 and up), adolescents and adults. After the evaluation, when working with an individual, we may, at times (and with appropriate permission), ask to meet with significant people in the individual's life. Typically, when we see a child for an individual session, we ask for at least one of the parents to meet with us, usually briefly, to provide information and to give feedback.
Pre-Marital Marital Commited Relationships Our certified couple's therapist has over 15 years experience working with couples who:
After an initial appointment with both partners, we then usually meet individually with each partner before meeting again with both partners to discuss the plan for therapy and decide on a course of action. Couple therapy, once begun, can range in length from short-term (3 to 4 months) to long term (over 9 months) depending upon the couple's needs and each partner's willingness to take a serious look at their own behavior and to make changes or compromises when appropriate. The family therapists at The Institute for Family Development have experience in working with families that come in all shapes and sizes. Traditional, single-parent, adoptive, blended families, etc. all have their own unique needs and ways that they function (and dysfunction). After conducting an appropriate evaluation process where we meet with family members individually and together in various subgroups, we create a therapy program that is tailored to each family's needs.
