Educational Support and Advocacy Program

Many children, adolescents and adults who are bright have learning problems and tend to become frustrated and discouraged. They often develop low self-esteem, never coming close to achieving their potential. Their families are usually torn-up about what to do and are frequently worn out.

Could this be you or someone you love???

If you answered "Yes," The Institute for Family Development is here to help!

The certified/licensed professionals at The Institute for Family Development have been working with individuals with learning problems for many years.

We have successfully worked with children, adolescents and adults who have problems with reading skills, writing skills, math skills, memory skills, organizational skills, attentional skills, processing deficits and other learning problems.

Our approach emphasizes meeting the individual's emotional as well as academic needs. We do this by tailoring our services to the strengths and weaknesses of each client's unique learning style and, if indicated, offering supportive counseling. We also help ensure success by not only working with the client, and, when appropriate (and, for older clients, with permission), working with family members and others involved in the learning process.

Programs for Children

Evaluations

We pride ourselves on doing a thorough, individualized evaluation and so we include:

  • obtaining a developmental history of the child by interview with the parent or caretaker
  • input, with your permission, from teachers and relevant others who work with the child
  • specific educational / cognitive / psychological / neuropsychological testing appropriate to the child's age to assess strengths and weaknesses
as part of our evaluation services.

We also provide feedback to review the results of the evaluations and recommendations via both a meeting with the parents and a complete written report. We also are available to meet with educators to review our recommendations.

Educational Advocacy

For those who feel lost in the academic "maze", educational advocacy is geared towards helping children and their families ensure that their rights to a free and appropriate public education are met. We can accompany parents to school meeting (We deal with both IDEA and Section 504 evaluations and plans) to provide direct support and advocacy for getting problems ironed out. We also provide consultative services for parents prior to school meetings to help them prepare for being equal partners in the educational decisions which will affect their child.

Programs for Older Students and Adults

As with our program for our younger clients, our evaluation and therapy services for adults are individualized and adapted to the specific needs of each client.

Evaluations

Our thorough Educational/Learning Style evaluations for adults include:

  • a case history interview
  • cognitive testing specific to your needs
  • a follow-up interview and a written report with test results and recommendations.
